By DJ Kayser, filling in for Douglas:

I hate to say it, but my snowshoes are still gathering dust out in the garage. I just haven’t had the time to break them out this winter. I’ve heard people out with their snowmobiles, though, so there are at least some taking advantage of the snow cover!

We are off to a faster start to the snow season than our recent past. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has already picked up 24.3 inches of snow this winter, more than the lousy 8.1 inches at this point last winter. In fact, 24.3 is actually a few inches above average! As a (sad) reminder, the last two winters saw totals of 29.4 and 29.5 inches, so we don’t have much farther to climb to surpass the past couple of lackluster winter recreational seasons.

A system will bring southern Minnesota some rain and snow showers later today into the overnight hours. This could clip the Twin Cities metro, but it looks like the bulk of that moisture will stay to the south. Up to an inch of snow could fall in parts of southern Minnesota. Another chance for light snow exists Friday night into Saturday, with colder weather (20s) for the weekend.
