Douglas: Celebrating a chilly, soggy Halloween this year

Winter is coming, but in no particular hurry.

I will never top the year I told everyone I was going to be Amelia Earhart for the Halloween party and then never showed up.

No crazy blizzards to track in 2025. I will take the Halloween Superstorm of 1991 to my grave. About 8 inches fell on Halloween and by the time the (temporarily stalled) storm was over a whopping 28.4 inches had fallen on the Twin Cities. It was epic. Thirty-six-foot drifts, roads closed, flights canceled; much of Minnesota effectively shut down for one to three days. A poignant reminder that it can still snow here in the Land of 10,000 Road Closures.

October 2025 is running 6 degrees warmer than average (80s and 90s early in the month) but Friday will be raw with 40s and light rain, courtesy of an ill-timed Alberta clipper. At least it won’t snow.

Winter is coming, but in no particular hurry. I see mostly 50s and a 60-degree high or two into mid-November. More quality raking time.

Snow chances usually increase around Thanksgiving. I think we’ll see more snow this winter than last, when 29.4 inches fell at MSP. Wow.
