Douglas: An inch or so ahead, but no blizzards in sight

Expect a string of highs near 32 degrees next week, so enjoy the powder while it’s here.

I have paused my college TV football marathon just long enough to look out the window and check on the weather models. No more blizzards in sight. We’ll have to be content with a parade of minor clippers capable of an inch or so today and tomorrow. Slick roads, but what else is new?

A little snowy perspective is in order. Six inches of snow are on the ground at MSP (your results may vary); 22.6 inches so far this winter. We should have picked up 18.3 inches so far, according to 30-year climate averages. Last year a meager 8.1 inches had fallen as of Dec. 31, so it’s progress. Something closer to a typical Minnesota winter.

The pattern won’t be ripe for hefty snowfalls anytime soon; the Gulf of Mexico is cut off as a big moisture source until further notice.

Next week I see a string of highs near 32 degrees. Not mild enough to melt all our snow, but if you like powder I’d get out sooner rather than later. No extended outbreaks of subzero air ganging up on Minnesota in sight. Kind of quiet.

Now, back to the Knut Johansen Lutefisk Pudding Bowl on ESPN 7.
