Don't take a chance again

The best and worst of Barry Manilow was on display last month on "Ellen's Really Big Show." He dazzled with the corny, but sweet "Mandy," then ruined it by getting up and shaking his tailfeather in a horrible tribute to Las Vegas. Let's hope "Barry Manilow: Songs From the Seventies" (7 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2) keeps the star chained to the piano and away from doing a Kiss medley.

Detective stories

Two tough cops are back on the beat with new episodes of "The Closer" (7 p.m., TNT) and "Saving Grace" (9 p.m., TNT), which reminds us: Isn't it about time for a new "Cagney & Lacey" movie?

She's having a baby

"Notes From the Underbelly" (8:30 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5) seems determined to prove that you can build an entire sitcom on the theme of getting pregnant. Maybe it works for viewers who are parents-to-be, but for the rest of us, it can be as grinding as the terrible twos. Props, though, to actress Rachael Harris, who provides solid comedy relief as a baby-phobic cynic.
