Fall is a good time to plant trees such as alders, maples, buckeye and elms and to snag end-of-the-season bargains at garden centers.
Plant trees before the ground is frozen and make sure you give them 5 to 10 gallons of water once a week into early winter, said Jeff Gillman, a horticulture professor at the University of Minnesota. Smaller trees with a trunk diameter of 1 to 2 inches have a better chance of surviving than larger ones.
