THE PROBLEM Parents wanted to turn a former grandmother's suite into a grown-up bedroom to give their 13-year-old son some independence and a place for his gadgets.
THE SOLUTION The basement was divided into three spaces that flow together: a sleeping spot, lounging area and a schoolwork station.
HOW IT HAPPENED • A feature wall covered with rolled-steel and handmade wallpaper is the jumping-off point for other colors and textures in the room.
• A masculine blue sleeper sofa, two funky white-leather and chrome chairs and an area rug create a lounge, complete with a wall-mounted flat-screen television.
• A curved, mottled-gray quartz desk provides a spot for studying, outfitted with a new computer and mixing station.
• An existing headboard was painted pale blue. Flanking either side of the bed is cabinetry with storage below and mirror-backed shelving above.
BEST TRICK The light fixture over the bed is made of 16 bulbs on long wires hanging from a box.
