Q How do you define "cleaning like the Dickens"?

A Well, you know I've always been a fast mover. If I get tired, I rest 10 minutes and then I get back at it!

Q You advise doing chores daily so there's time to enjoy yourself. How do you avoid letting big tasks, like window-washing, become a time-consuming sinkhole?

A You don't always! I've been traveling so much, I might not get any cleaning in until the 19th or 20th [speaking on the 5th]. But I always get my vacuuming done twice a week and my wash is always caught up.

Q Where do you stand on the whole dustup over not using dish rags because they carry bacteria?

A You know what, we have had a very healthy family and I've used dish rags for more than 50 years, so I don't go along with that at all.

Q Your cleaning supply list of handy items includes everything from aluminum foil to tabasco sauce. Why?

A I use foil to clean a kettle or a grill, crumpled up foil that's used but is still clean. Tabasco? I don't remember what that's for!

Q You laud the big four for most cleaning needs: baking soda, lemons, white vinegar and dishwashing fluid. Now that you have your own line of products, do you still use them?

A No, (laughter) because it's so much more pleasant using Mrs. Meyer's!

Q Which scent is your favorite?

A I started out liking lavender, then I liked geranium. I love the Christmas scents. Lemon verbena is probably my least favorite.

Q You speak out forcefully against the current, "inhospitable" social convention of being asked to take your shoes off in another person's home. Has your defiance ever gotten you into trouble?

A (Laughs) If it has, they haven't voiced it!

Q With nine kids, there must have been some spectacular messes.

A Forever there was a glass of milk being spilled at every meal. It never failed. And if the kids didn't spill it, it was Vern or me. I'd send the kids outside with the chairs on Saturday to wash the legs.

Q At age 76, have you let some tasks go by the wayside?

A No, not really. I still like to wash my cupboards once a year; I still like to wash my windows outside. Just one time I hired a cleaning lady because I had a film crew coming and I didn't have time to clean.

Q So you still do windows?

A I still do windows!

Perla was accused of raping a student during a wine-tasting outing in June 2015. Some of the files are so heavily redacted that on many pages no words are visible. Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
