DeLaSalle lineman Drayton Carlberg on Friday announced his intention to play football for the University of Oregon.
The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Carlberg, a senior who is rated as a three-star recruit by national recruiting service Rivals.com, chose Oregon over five other finalists, including Minnesota. He said Oregon's willingness to give him a shot at playing defensive line was a big part of his decision.
"I love Coach Kill and all the coaches [at Minnesota], but they only recruited me for one side of the ball," said Carlberg, who announced his choice at DeLaSalle. "Oregon is going to give me a chance to play defensive line and that's my preference. But I'll play anywhere the coaches ask me to play."
Carlberg said he had made his mind up about a week ago, on the flight home from Oregon after his official recruiting visit.
"I loved the family atmosphere when I was there," Carlberg said. "I asked my mom what I should do and she told to go where I felt the most at home. I said 'You're right, mom.' That was Oregon."
Carlberg added that Oregon has invited his brother Hunter, a 6-1, 280-pound lineman, to have preferred walk-on status.
Carlberg's other finalists were Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Michigan State and California.
He's the second top Minnesota prospect landed by the Ducks. Last month East Ridge quarterback Seth Green, a junior, announced that he would attend Oregon in 2016.
