David Price's elbow has Red Sox on alert

March 3, 2017 at 4:06AM

Boston lefthander David Price was scratched from his first spring training start and will consult with specialists after experiencing soreness in his left forearm and elbow.

Price, who is scheduled to make his first spring start this weekend, underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Wednesday, but results of the test were not yet available. Still, Price is expected to seek second opinions from Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Neil ElAttrache, who are at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Price threw 38 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Tuesday and felt no discomfort. He first noticed the soreness Wednesday morning.

"He's gone through some soreness in the forearm/elbow area in previous spring trainings, but this one has got a little bit more intensity to it," Farrell said.

Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said the club was setting up appointments for Price. "You're concerned any time any of your pitchers have a sore elbow," Dombrowski said.

Price went 17-9 with a 3.99 ERA in a major league-high 35 starts last season, his first in Boston. The Red Sox signed him in December 2015 to a seven-year, $210 million contract.

Kang sentenced

A South Korean court handed Pittsburgh infielder Jung Ho Kang a suspended prison sentence of two years for fleeing the scene after crashing a car into a guardrail while drunken driving.

The sentence Friday in Seoul was heavier punishment than the $13,000 fine prosecutors had sought but still clears the 29-year-old to join the Pirates for the new season.

Kang was previously fined on drunken driving-related charges in 2009 and 2011. He is in the third year of a four-year contract after a stellar eight-year career in South Korea.

Etc.

• Mets captain David Wright offered no hint of abandoning his grueling quest to get back on the field, even on the heels of his latest setback from major neck surgery, a severely weakened right shoulder that will keep him from throwing indefinitely. That means any thought of playing in a major league game is on hold, with the 34-year-old third baseman calling it "worthless" to affix any timelines on his recovery.

• David Ortiz will be joined by 7-year-old Maverick Schutte when the retired Boston slugger accepts the inaugural CHARMED Courage Award next month. Schutte, a Wyoming native and Red Sox fan, has the congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot. Last season, he met Ortiz, who promised to hit a homer for him and delivered with one against the Yankees that night.

• Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols continues moving toward Opening Day, although he is not ready to proclaim that he will be ready by then. Pujols, who is recovering from foot surgery, has been doing all defensive drills and running sprints on the field, and he has been hitting. The last piece to the puzzle is running the bases.

• Righthander Andrew Cashner, expected by most to earn the fourth spot in the Texas rotation, has soreness in his right upper biceps and will see team physician Dr. Keith Meister on Friday.
