The Chicago Cubs made the first of two significant moves Tuesday night by agreeing to terms with versatile Ben Zobrist on a four-year contract. They also traded Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees for righthanded pitcher Adam Warren and a player to be named later.
Zobrist, 34, a 10-year veteran who played nine of his 10 seasons for Cubs manager Joe Maddon with the Tampa Bay Rays, is expected to fill a variety of roles for the Cubs.
Zobrist batted .276 with a .359 on-base percentage for the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals in 2015.
Zobrist will earn $56 million over the life of the contract.
Chapman not charged, but trade still on hold
Despite police deciding not to charge Aroldis Chapman in a domestic assault case, the Reds closer's trade to the Dodgers appears to be on hold.
A Davie (Fla.) Police Department report says there was "insufficient evidence" to charge Chapman in the Oct. 30 incident because of conflicting stories, no cooperating witnesses and no physical injuries.
Police say 22-year-old Cristina Barnea told them Chapman pushed her and put his hands around her neck during an argument.
Chapman told investigators he poked her on the shoulder and she fell to the ground screaming. Chapman says he got into his vehicle and punched a window, got his gun from the glove box and fired several shots inside his garage.
