Maxon Hutton passed for 159 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown to lead Concordia (St. Paul) to a 41-17 victory over Sioux Falls in the NSIC South Division opener for both teams Thursday in St. Paul.
The Golden Bears started slowly, trailing 7-3 after the first quarter, before outscoring the Cougars 24-0 in the second quarter to open a 27-7 halftime lead.
Sioux Falls scored 10 points in the third quarter to narrow the Golden Bears' lead to 27-17 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Golden Bears got rushing touchdowns from Hutton and Lajuan Preston in a two-minute span to pull away. Preston finished with 80 rushing yards in 13 attempts.
Bemidji State 33, Northern State 7: Brandon Alt passed for 192 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Beavers to the season-opening victory over the host Wolves in Aberdeen, S.D. Alt threw two TD passes in the first quarter as the Beavers built a 19-0 lead.
St. Cloud State 35, Mary 12: Dwayne Lawhorn threw five touchdown passes and Joe Blando rushed for 115 yards to fuel the Huskies' season-opening victory over the host Marauders in Bismarck, N.D.
Buena Vista 51, Hamline 7: Reyes Lara passed for two TDS and Stephen Grimm rushed for two touchdowns as the Beavers rolled past the host Pipers in St. Paul. The Beavers, who led 32-0 at halftime, limited the Pipers to 32 yards in offense. Manny Moton rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown for the Pipers.

• Syracuse is honoring former All-America Tim Green during the Orange's game against No. 1 Clemson. A defensive lineman for the Orange, Green is the all-time sacks leader at Syracuse with 45.5. Green recently revealed he has ALS.
