Community gardens on parade Sure, sure, you've heard about community gardens before. You know they build relationships, improve communities and benefit the environment. But did you know they can cut your food budget?

If you're interested in getting involved in a community garden, check out the third annual Parade of Community Gardens. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, 45 community gardens across the Twin Cities and the state will be open for self-guided tours. Some gardens on the tour also will have music, massage and treats.

For more info, go to www.gardenworksMN.org or call 612-278-7123.

Culture in the garden This Sunday, Como Park will be turning Japanese. Starting at 3 p.m., the park -- from the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory to the Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden -- will be filled with taiko drumming, demonstrations of martial arts and flower-arranging and traditional Japanese music, dance and food. There also will be origami and kite demonstrations.

The highlight of the event is the lantern lighting, which takes place at dusk. The six stone lanterns in the Japanese garden will be lit and paper lanterns will be floated on ponds.

The annual event honors Japan's Obon holiday, in which the spirits of ancestors visit their families on Earth. The lanterns are lit to guide the souls back to their resting places. It also celebrates the traditional garden, which uses the elements of rock, water and plants to create a peaceful environment.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 3 to 12. There's also free shuttle bus service from Midway Stadium.
