While it's usually a shared cause that brings people together for a party, that was definitely the case at CommonBond's 12th annual GrandeGala. Joe Errigo, who founded what is now the state's largest nonprofit housing developer and ran it for 35 years (until 2006) noted that the term "social entrepreneur" is a concept that is not always easily understood. "I've had people ask, 'Is this a business or a charity?'" he said. "But why can't it be both? That's what this is all about."

The event raised more than $400,000 to support its "advantage services" provided to residents. "For kids, the focus is on school success and going to college; for adults, it's about finding good jobs and financial literacy, and for seniors and disabled people it's about living independently for as long as possible," said Paul Fate, the president CommonBond Communities. "We're all about creating stable homes, strong futures and vibrant communities."

Laurie Callahan received an award for her seven years of volunteering with youth at the Skyline Tower in St. Paul. She currently mentors and tutors five high school students. "We're an established group, and we are a family," she said. "Seeing them grow and have the opportunity to go to college with new confidence and new direction in their lives, I have a strong belief that education is the key to the future."
