Commissioner Roger Goodell said pass interference review rule working

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the new video review rule for pass interference is working, with only obvious mistakes by officials being corrected.

Through Week 6, the league has had 44 reviews related to pass interference, and the on-field ruling was reversed seven times.

"Coaches understood replay was not going to correct every pass interference close call," Goodell said Wednesday at the close of the two-day owners' meetings in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "It's not possible to make it perfect, and we're not re-officiating these plays. The thought process was to correct the obvious and clear error."

The new rule approved as a one-year experiment allows pass interference calls or non-calls to be challenged by coaches and reviewed via replay.

As for the erroneous hands-to-the-face flag that tainted Green Bay's 23-22 win over the Lions on Monday, Goodell said such controversy is part of any sport. "We have to continue to do everything to improve," he said. "But that's sports. You see it in every sport."

Goodell also said labor discussions on a new collective bargaining agreement have touched on the possible expansion to a 17-game season.

If that happens, the Super Bowl would be one week later, but the season would still start the week after Labor Day.

Barber arrested

Former Dallas Cowboys and Gophers running back Marion Barber III was arrested Wednesday in Texas' Denton County, the Dallas Morning News reported. Barber, 36, was booked into the Denton County jail on two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief that stemmed from a July 2018 incident, jail records showed.

Authorities have not released information about what led to the misdemeanor charges. Each count carries a possible punishment of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Quarterback carousel

• After scoring one touchdown over the past 10 quarters, the Titans said veteran Ryan Tannehill will replace Marcus Mariota as their starting quarterback. "We're trying to get a little spark," coach Mike Vrabel said.

• Mason Rudolph will return to the Steelers' starting lineup at quarterback after being cleared by an independent neurological consultant following a concussion he sustained against Baltimore on Oct. 6. Rookie Devlin "Duck" Hodges filled in for Rudolph during a 24-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday.

• The Bears are cautiously optimistic quarterback Mitch Trubisky will return this week from a left shoulder injury suffered Sept. 29 against the Vikings. Trubisky said he feels "close" to 100%.

• Ryan Fitzpatrick will start for the Dolphins, instead of Josh Rosen, on Sunday against the Bills.

Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
