Comic book movies: Bif! Bam! Pow!

You've seen "The Avengers," so maybe it's time for something a little different? The Trylon has you covered with this series highlighting stranger, off-the-beaten-path films from the vast world of comics. There's "Persepolis" (7 & 9 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 5 & 7 p.m. Sun.), based on Marjane Satrapi's experiences growing up around the Iranian Revolution. The hilariously dated "Fritz the Cat" (June 15-17) revels in counterculture politics and plenty of sex and weed. "Flash Gordon" (June 22-24) is the first of the live-action selections, playing in tandem with "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." The latter is a blast of hyper-stylized fun, soaked to the bone in video-game and pop-culture nostalgia, but also biting in its satire of the modern man-child. The series ends strongly with the documentary "Crumb" (June 29-July 1), about the artist who created "Fritz the Cat" and many other seminal underground comics. It's a dark, honest exploration of a weirdo who found a way out of a depressing upbringing.
