Badgers turn back Northern Michigan

• WISCONSIN 5, NORTHERN MICHIGAN 2: Tyler Barnes and Michael Mersch each had a goal and an assist as the Badgers, No. 3 in uscho.com's preseason poll, beat the Wildcats at the Kohl Center on Friday night. Joseph LaBate, of Holy Angels, gave Wisconsin a 1-0 lead at 5:07 of the opening period and defenseman Jake McCabe scored shorthanded 1:32 later to make it 2-0.

• PENN STATE 4, ARMY 1: The Nittany Lions opened the Pegula Ice Arena by beating the Black Knights before an announced crowd of 6,370. Nate Jensen gave Penn State a 1-0 lead at 3:02 of the first period. Curtis Loik's shorthanded goal at 3:24 of the third made it 2-0. The home team took 11 penalties for 33 minutes, but Army was 1-for-10 on the power play.

• MIAMI (OHIO) 6, OHIO STATE 2: Cody Murphy broke a 2-2 tie at 3:22 of the third period and the No. 2 RedHawks scored three more times after that against the host Buckeyes. This was the first game for Steve Rohlik as OSU coach. Rohlik is a former UMD assistant and head coach at Hill-Murray.

• ST. CLOUD STATE 3, BEMIDJI STATE 2: Sophomore Joey Benik scored the first two goals and Nic Dowd got the winner, with 4:01 left in the second period, as the No. 9 Huskies beat the Beavers at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Benik missed most of last season because of a broken leg. Markus Gerbrandt and Cory Ward had Bemidji State's goals.

• NORTH DAKOTA 5, VERMONT 3: After falling behind 3-1 at home, No. 7 UND rallied to beat the Catamounts. Rocco Grimaldi started the comeback with a goal at 13:34 of the second period. He also had three assists, one on Mark MacMillan's winner early in the final period.

• MINNESOTA DULUTH 2, MICHIGAN TECH 1: Justin Crandall's goal with 2:46 to play broke a 1-1 tie for the Bulldogs at Amsoil Arena. UMD outshot Tech 41-16, but Huskies goalie Pheonix Copley made 39 saves to keep the score close.

• PROVIDENCE 5, MINNESOTA STATE 1: Bryce Gervais gave the No. 11 Mavericks a 1-0 lead early in the opening period, but the No. 14 Friars, playing at home, scored two goals in the second and three in the third.
