College Basketball Insider: St. Louis doing just as Majerus believed

It would have been difficult to predict St. Louis' quick rise.

Before the start of the season, the Billikens weren't even a lock to win their conference, despite a scaled-back Atlantic 10 that lost Butler and Xavier to the Big East. They received only three writer votes for a spot in the Associated Press preseason poll even after advancing to the NCAA tournament in each of the past two seasons.

The Billikens had talent, but top-10-caliber upside is another thing altogether.

Rick Majerus saw it coming.

Two years ago in an interview with columnist John Canzano of the Oregonian news­paper, the St. Louis coach said his squad would find its way to national prominence — quickly.

"We'll be a top-10 team in about three years," Majerus said then. "I did it at Ball State, did it at Utah, and we're going to do it here."

Only nine months later, Majerus was dead from heart failure, unable to see the realization of his prophecy.

None of it means the Billikens are perfect, of course. St. Louis fell at home to Duquesne — a team ranked 183rd the nation in the RPI — on Thursday, when the Billikens turned the ball over 16 times and allowed the Dukes to shoot 53.3 percent from three-point range. The loss figures to take St. Louis back out of the top 10 on Monday.

But the statement of the Billikens' strength is not lost.

After winning 20 consecutive games before that loss — their only other losses came against No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 2 Wichita State — the Billikens (25-3) will try to take their positive streak into the NCAA tournament, where St. Louis bowed out to Oregon in the round of 32 last March.

The Billikens never have made the tournament three seasons in a row, but they are poised not just to make it (both ESPN's Joe Lunardi and CBS' Jerry Palm have St. Louis as a No. 4 seed), but to do some damage within.

They certainly have the defense for it, anyway.

As the Billikens went on their winning streak, the rest of the country started paying attention to the intriguing midmajor, which seems to have the firepower and tenacity to compete with the chalk.

Systematically, the Billikens have worked their way back to the top 10, just as their former coach believe they could, believed they would.

Come March, it shouldn't shock fans if St. Louis makes a deep run.

Somewhere, if Majerus is watching, it certainly wouldn't surprise him.

Whether the Shockers will be rewarded for this feat with a No. 1 seed is still a subject of great debate, but if you need another argument in favor of that, ESPN's Eamonn Brennan provides one, via ESPN Stats & Info. In the Associated Press poll era, each other the previous four teams that followed Final Four appearances with a 30-0 start (including postseason games) made it back to the Final Four the following year. Regardless of your thoughts on the disastrous Missouri Valley Conference (and it is), Wichita State is for real.
• Heading into Saturday's game at Xavier, Creighton's Doug McDermott — a near-lock for Player of the Year — is 83 points shy of 3,000 for his career, a milestone that only seven players have ever achieved. Will he hit the mark before he leaves CenturyLink Center court for the last time?

The Omaha World Herald points out that it's very possible. McDermott is averaging 26 points a game. He would need 28 per game to reach 3,000 in the next three.
• In each of the past two seasons, the team with the best Basketball Percentage Index from Feb. 1 to Selection Sunday has won the national championship, ESPN notes. The team with the current best BPI since Feb. 1? North Carolina.
• Jim Boeheim's freakout followed by ejection over a foul call has kind of dominated Syracuse coverage lately, but those hysterics are masking the real issue the Orange is experiencing, Rush The Court points out. The offense is struggling, big time. In the first 24 games, Syracuse posted a 102.1 offensive efficiency rate — meaning the Orange scored 102.1 points per 100 possessions. But in the past four games, Boeheim's bunch has posted offensive efficiencies of 92.5, 94.3, 99.6 and 88.6.

Michigan: In a year of complete insanity in the Big Ten, the Wolverines have been the most consistent team by far.
Wisconsin: The Badgers have beaten Michigan State, Michigan and Iowa during their six-game winning streak.
Michigan State: The Spartans have fallen into a win-one, lose-one pattern.
Ohio State: File Penn State sweeping the Buckeyes under things we did not expect.
Nebraska: Before an ugly loss at Illinois, the Huskers were on a five-game winning streak.
Iowa: Nearly every team has gone through the wringer in the Big Ten this year.
Minnesota: There might not be any team with a more confusing set of data.
Indiana: I take it back. The Hoosiers are just like the Gophers. What a weird year.
Penn State: The Nittany Lions are the last team to make it to five victories.
Northwestern: Northwestern has lost its last five after starting out so strong.
Illinois: The Illini are in by far their best stretch, winning three of five.
Purdue: The Boilermakers have the least impressive victories in the five-win bunch.
