Tuesday 11/1 and Thursday-Saturday 11/3-5
There are two Minnesota Orchestra programs this week, both led by Osmo Vänskä. On Tuesday, hear a reprise of the band's Oct. 27 Carnegie Hall concert, with the terrific Stephen Hough in Tchaikovsky's tiresome Piano Concerto No. 1. Also that night: Carl Nielsen's rapturous "Sinfonia espansiva." Thursday ushers in the extraordinary Midori in Sibelius' Violin Concerto (once waggishly dubbed "Tchaikovsky's best"), along with superlative sea music by Britten (from "Peter Grimes") and Debussy ("La mer").
