Friday - Sunday 5/25-27

If calculated stylistic contrast makes for a memorable program, next weekend's concerts by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra should be unforgettable. On the menu are two works by Mozart, who epitomizes the virtues of the classical period, and two by the volcanic Edgard Varèse (1885-1965), arguably the quintessential modernist. The soloists are worthy of the music: Jeffrey Kahane in Mozart's grand C-major Piano Concerto, K.503, and SPCO principal Julia Bogorad-Kogan in Varèse's "Density 21.5," the solo flute piece to end all solo flute pieces. The admirable Hans Graf conducts. (10:30 a.m. & 8 p.m. Fri., 8 p.m. Sat., Ordway Center, 5th and Washington Sts., St. Paul; 2 p.m. next Sun., Ted Mann Concert Hall, University of Minnesota, 2128 S. 4th St., Mpls. $10-$40. 651-291-1144 or www.thespco.org.)
