Class 2A preview: Can Pipestone defense stop Caledonia three-peat bid?

Two-time defending champion Caledonia might be the most dominant team in its class

CLASS 2A

CALEDONIA (12-0) vs. PIPESTONE AREA (12-1), FRIDAY, 1 P.M.

Two-time defending champion Caledonia might be the most dominant team in its class. QB Owen King gets most of the publicity — 2,592 yards and 40 touchdowns passing this season and an undefeated record as a three-year starter will do that. But the Warriors also have a stellar receiving corps led by senior Andrew Goergen, a pick-your-poison backfield duo of Nick McCabe and Mason Staggemeyer, and a defense that's allowed only seven points before the fourth quarter through four postseason games. Pipestone, which lost to Caledonia 40-0 in the 2015 Prep Bowl, has a pretty fair QB in Cody Thompson, who's passed for more than 2,000 yards and 25 TDs. The Arrows will need a shut-down effort from their defense to keep pace with the Warriors.

The pick

Jim: Caledonia 44, Pipestone 16

David: Caledonia 49, Pipestone 10

The Gophers played with more urgency, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from another conference sweep, and they lost LJ Mooney to injury in the process.
