CHECKING IN

The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (1-906-289-4403; www.atthelodge.com) sits just outside Copper Harbor on Hwy. 41 and provides an assortment of cabins, complete with fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. The lodge and cabins were built after the mining boom crashed; the federal government intervened, instituting an emergency program that led to the building of the on-site golf course, lodge and surrounding cabins. Today, the property is managed by the county, keeping rates reasonable. Enjoy a fresh-fish dinner at the on-site restaurant .

Just west of Copper Harbor, the Dapple-Gray Bed and Breakfast (13640 Hwy. 26; 1-866-909-1233; www.dapple-gray.com) is a Victorian bed-and-breakfast overlooking Lake Superior that features four guest rooms and a summer cabin. The innkeepers have a passion for antiquing, so in addition to furnishings throughout the house there is a small antiques shop.
