Take a red grape associated with Italy, another with France and finally one from California. Blend them, and what do you get? In the case of the Whiplash “Redemption” 2009 ($12), a whole lot of deliciousness.

This mix of barbera, syrah and zinfandel delivers rich fruit, firm and dusty tannins and a persistent finish. It is the best cheeseburger wine I’ve come across all winter, and also should pair well with pizza and meaty or meatless winter stews.
