Q Is it a mortal sin to place a chair halfway on a rug?

A Having only the front of a chair or sofa on the rug in a living space is just fine. But in a dining room, it's important to have a rug large enough so that the back legs of the chairs still remain on the rug. That way the chairs will be level when someone is sitting on them.

Creative color Q I rent a small, windowless bedroom that is painted boring builder's white. Because I can't paint the walls, I've tried to bring in color in the bedding, picture frames, mirrored wardrobe, etc. What else can I do to bring life into the space?

A Try framing very bold wallpaper. It's not permanent, but if you use many frames, it can give the look of a wallpapered wall.

Mixing metals Q Is it OK to mix wood and metal finishes in one room?

A It's perfectly OK. In fact, it's even OK to mix a variety of woods and a variety of metals. However, if the scale of the room is small, you would want to limit yourself to two woods and one or two metals.
