History will say the Boston Celtics passed on the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NBA draft, not only trading it away but doing so in a deal with one of the team's fiercest rivals.

Danny Ainge isn't worried.

Philadelphia and Boston completed their trade of draft picks on Monday, the 76ers acquiring the No. 1 pick from the Celtics and netting the chance to draft Washington guard Markelle Fultz.

The Celtics sent that pick to the Sixers for the No. 3 pick and the protected Los Angeles Lakers first-rounder in 2018, which the Sixers owned. The Celtics will get the pick if it falls in slots 2-5 in next summer's NBA draft lottery. If it does not, Boston will receive either the Sacramento Kings' or Sixers' first-round pick in 2019. The Celtics would take whichever one is more favorable. But if either of those picks become the first overall, the Celtics will receive the other pick.

"We're getting the player we want. They're getting the player they want," said Ainge, the Celtics' president of basketball operations. "And we're getting an additional player that we want in next year's draft or the year after. It's a good deal for both teams."

The player Philadelphia wants is clear: The 76ers wouldn't say it Monday, but they're going to take Fultz barring something cataclysmic happening before Thursday.

"We felt like the move from 3 to 1 was worth the cost of a first-round pick in the future," 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo said.

Cavs want George

The Cavaliers are among those discussing a possible trade with the Pacers for four-time All-Star Paul George after he told the Pacers on Sunday of his intention to leave after next season, multiple sources reported.

The Pacers contacted the Cavs about George. The Vertical said George would be a "one-year rental," with George ready to hit free agency after the 2017-18 season. According to that website, George, a native of Palmdale, Calif., is interested in joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

George, 27, averaged 23.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season. Eliminated from the playoffs by the Cavs in a first-round sweep, George improved those numbers to 28 points, 8.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists in the 2017 postseason.

The Sporting News reported Monday that the LA Clippers are also interested in George through a sign-and-trade.

The Pacers are reportedly seeking a package of talent and draft picks. The Cavs have no picks in this draft and likely would have to surrender a member of their Big Three — presumably Kevin Love. He has two years left on his contract, which carries a $22.6 million salary for next season.

Love, 28, is coming off his best statistical season in his three with the Cavs, averaging 19 points and 11.1 rebounds. In the playoffs, those numbers were 18.9 points and 11.9 rebounds.

•The Cavaliers and General Manager David Griffin decided to part ways following three consecutive trips to the NBA Finals. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said the Cavaliers will not extend Griffin's contract when it expires June 30.

Durant to stay

Kevin Durant reportedly is declining his player option for the 2017-18 season with the intention of re-signing with the Warriors.

Durant opted out of about $28 million to become a free agent briefly — but plans on rejoining the team — in an effort to help resign sixth-man extraordinaire Andre Iguodala.

Durant reportedly plans to take about $4 million less than the maximum he is eligible for as a 10-year veteran. Durant is expected to sign another two-year contract with a player option on the second year.
