Prince Harry says he's taking a "leap of faith'' as he steps back from royal duties in an attempt to build a more peaceful life — one free of the journalists who have filmed, photographed and written about him since the day he was born.
Harry has long had a frosty relationship with the media, and on Sunday, he made it clear that the press was a major reason for the couple's decision to step back from royal life. In a personal speech that referenced his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi, he said he had "no other option'' but to step away.
Harry has accused the media of directing "a wave of abuse and harassment" at the biracial Meghan, including "racial undertones" in articles.
Harry's public comments at a London dinner for Sentebale, his Africa-based charity supporting youngsters affected by HIV, were his first since his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, announced the terms under which the prince and Meghan will refrain from most royal duties, give up public funding and try to become financially independent. The couple are expected to spend most of their time in Canada while maintaining a home in England near Windsor Castle.
SAG reunion: Jen and Brad
Sunday night's SAG Awards were notable as a reunion for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. They each took home awards and celebrated the other's win. Pitt won his Screen Actors Guild award for his supporting performance in "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood." Aniston won an award of her own for best actress in a drama series for the Apple TV Plus show "The Morning Show." Backstage, Pitt watched Aniston's acceptance speech. After she got offstage, they warmly congratulated each other on their first individual SAG Awards. Aniston told US Weekly after the ceremony ended that she thought it was "sweet" that Pitt watched her speech. The stars' five-year marriage came to an end in 2005. After their divorce, Pitt was married to Angelina Jolie from 2014 to 2019. Aniston, meanwhile, split from Justin Theroux in 2017 after two years of marriage.
Together: A couple who had been together for nearly 65 years died on the same day in a St. Louis-area nursing home. Jack and Harriet Morrison's beds were placed next to each other in their final hours, allowing them to hold hands, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Jack, 86, died first. Harriett, 83, died later on Jan. 11. "I'm sad. But I know they're at peace and they're back together," said Sue Wagener, a niece raised by the Morrisons. "It truly was a love story for the books."
