For one brief shining moment on Sunday night in Las Vegas, Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, was crowned Miss Universe.

And then the host, Steve Harvey, realized he had misread the card.

It was a gaffe made for Twitter, the age of GIFs, Vines and 24/7 social media snark.

Harvey did not realize his mistake until after Gutierrez had begun to soak up the glory of the title.

She was standing center stage wearing the glittering crown when Harvey sheepishly returned to the stage, his steps slow and heavy.

"OK, folks, uh," he stammered. "There's … I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia," he said.

The cameras panning rapidly back and forth among Harvey, Gutierrez and the actual winner, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Looks of confusion, shock and mortification abounded.

"Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," Harvey exclaimed.

Wurtzbach walked awkwardly forward, seemingly unsure of what to do.

Harvey apologized effusively and made a point of showing the card to the cameras to prove that the second crowning of the night was, in fact, the correct one.

Then he swiftly headed for stage right as Miss Philippines took her place beside Miss Colombia, still clutching her flowers and wearing the crown. The two contestants stood awkwardly side by side, while one woman was de-crowned and the other was crowned.

For first time in decades, a Miss Iraq

A 20-year-old woman from Kirkuk was chosen Miss Iraq in the first national pageant in the war-torn country in more than 40 years. The final had to be moved from Basra to Baghdad after threats from conservative Muslims.

The jury chose Shaima Qassim in a pageant designed to meet enough international criteria to send her to the next Miss Universe contest. But organizers made concessions to such cultural sensitivities as no swimsuit competition; evening gowns were all below the knee. The new Miss Iraq said that she would use her platform to push educational programs, especially among those displaced by war. One contestant said she would try to fix the Mosul dam, Agence France-Presse reported. Iraq has held only one pageant as part of Miss Universe — in 1972.
