Fidel Castro appeared publicly Saturday for the first time in four months at an event in Havana to mark his 90th birthday.

Castro attended a gala at Karl Marx Theatre in the Cuban capital with his brother and successor Raul Castro and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. About 5,000 guests chanted "Fidel, Fidel."

Earlier in the day, Castro received greetings from political allies, including a telephone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin's office also published a birthday message to Castro on its website.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega also paid tribute, calling Castro a "big brother." The former guerrilla leader said Castro fought his entire life for peace and justice.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Twitter that the Cuban revolution "is the mother of revolution in Latin America."

Castro led Cuba from 1959-2006, overseeing a communist regime on the U.S. doorstep.

He relinquished power in 2006. His brother Raul was officially appointed as the country's leader in 2008 and launched the process of restoring relations with the United States in late 2014.

No. 42 honored: The Yankees have dedicated a plaque to retired reliever Mariano Rivera that will be placed in Monument Park behind center field at Yankee Stadium. Controlling owner Hal Steinbrenner presented Rivera with a replica of the plaque during a 25-minute ceremony before Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Co-owner Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal gave the retired reliever a ring in 14-carat white gold with "42" formed by diamonds. Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams were among the former teammates on the field for the tribute along with current manager Joe Girardi and former manager Joe Torre. Rivera's speech to fans was as brief as many of his relief appearances: 3 minutes.
