Skip the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" books and many spinoffs. Instead, get "World Heritage Sites, 4th edition," which details all 936 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Unlike the subjective list of "1,000 Places," this book highlights each of the painstakingly researched World Heritage Sites with a map, a description and, in most cases, a beautiful photograph. There is no tacit suggestion that if you don't travel to these places, you'll be missing out, but it is indeed inspiring.
