The family of a 12-year-old Chicago girl with cancer says Taylor Swift called her to talk about music, touring and the disease.
Ed Beazley said Swift chatted with his daughter, Emily, for about 10 minutes Wednesday.
Emily has non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Friends and family have been appealing to Swift via social media to call Emily, including a video with about 200 children singing and dancing to Swift songs.
Emily's mother, Nadia Beazley, says her daughter had "the biggest smile" and "jumped up and down" after the Grammy Award winner's call.
She says Swift's manager offered the family tickets and a chance to meet the singer at her Detroit concert May 30.
Swift announced this month that her mother has cancer.
Vergara's ex says he'll fight for embryos
Actress Sofia Vergara's former fiancé says in an op-ed that he sued the "Modern Family" star to protect their frozen embryos because he longs to become a parent and doesn't want the "two lives" they created to "be destroyed or sit in a freezer until the end of time." Businessman Nick Loeb wrote Wednesday on NYTimes.com that as the child of divorced parents he yearned to have the kind of family depicted in artist Norman Rockwell's iconic paintings. He said he was willing to take full parental responsibility if Vergara didn't want to share custody, but she refused. The two had signed a form stating that any embryos they created could only be brought to term if both of them agreed. Loeb said the form didn't specifically say, as California law requires, what would happen to the embryos if they separated.
trial date: A judge on Thursday set a July trial date for a murder case against Marion "Suge" Knight that was filed after the former rap music mogul ran over two men earlier this year. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald Coen said Knight's trial will begin July 7 unless a motion is made to continue it for a later date. Knight pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges filed after he killed one man and seriously injured another with his pickup outside a Compton burger stand in January. His attorney has said Knight was fleeing an ambush when he hit the men.
