Various artists, "Cities 97 Sampler Volume 22" It's easy to applaud the charity component of this annual project by Twin Cities radio station Cities 97 (97.1 FM), which will donate $800,000 to local organizations this year. But this collection of mostly acoustic tunes -- on sale Thursday at metro Target stores -- deserves a standing ovation because it's the best "Cities Sampler" in years. There are more female singers (it's about time), more varied textures (it's not all just voice and acoustic guitar) and more distinctive voices (it's not all high-voiced men).

Most of the tracks were recorded in the radio station's Studio C, but John Mayer was captured at his soundcheck at Xcel Energy Center, Big Head Todd & the Monsters at a small club performance and the Avett Brothers at this summer's Basilica Block Party. The changes-of-venue enhance the dynamics and pacing of this 18-song disc. So does the rich range of voices: the colorful Brandi Carlile, the assertive David Gray, the soulful Amos Lee, the passionate Keane, the luxurious Sarah McLachlan and, best of all, the spirited Avett Brothers. Oh, and don't miss the hidden track -- the good for laughs "We Love Mexican Food" by Ingrid Michaelson.

If you're not familiar with the "Cities Sampler" drill, here's how it works: At 8 a.m. Thursday, 33,000 copies of "Volume 22" will go on sale at Target stores in the Twin Cities for $24.97 each. Arrive early. They'll be gone quickly.
