Gophers freshman linebacker Carter Coughlin suffered an elbow injury Saturday that likely will keep him out multiple weeks, coach Tracy Claeys confirmed Sunday.

Coughlin made his first career start and made six tackles against Colorado State, including a tackle for a loss. But he sustained an elbow injury that Claeys said could be similar to the one that has kept senior linebacker Nick Rallis out the past two games.

In other news, the Gophers appeared to land a junior college safety recruit Sunday, when Jaquarius Landrews gave them a verbal commitment. But according to multiple recruiting sties, Landrews later indicated he was sticking with his commitment Mississippi State.

The 6-1, 205-pound Landrews is a consensus three-star recruit who also had reported offers from Arkansas, Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee State. A native of McComb, Miss., he is a sophomore at Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) Community College. He plans to graduate in December and transfer in time to be eligible for spring practice.
