Work has begun on a $10.5 million expansion of the Cambridge Medical Center.

The project involves an addition of 15,000 square feet to the center, with an additional 1,000 square feet of space being renovated. That includes 21 patient treatment rooms (all private), a new short-stay entrance, and four new chemotherapy/infusion suites.

Allina Hospitals & Clinics says it is funding the majority of the project, with Cambridge Medical Center kicking in $1 million.

Kraus-Anderson Construction Co, the contractor, says the clinic will remain open during construction, and a temporary parking area will be opened until completion.
