Over the past year, hundreds of you have asked Whistleblower for help. While we can't investigate each tip, we want to share more of what you tell us. In 2009, we started publishing a few tips each week to stimulate online discussion and create ways for our readers to help each other. Unlike our news stories, we have not verified this information, so we do not include the names of the parties involved. If you have a tip, send it to whistleblower@startribune.com.
Burning dishwasher not covered in recall
Should you get compensated even if your product isn't part of a recall?
By Lora Pabst
A St. Louis Park man noticed a burning smell coming from his five-year-old dishwasher one day. He opened the door, and flames shot out. He found out that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) had issued two recalls for the same model dishwasher, but his serial number wasn't included.
"This washer does not appear to be in the list of recalls, but clearly it is the same problem the others have had and we would like to be compensated for it," he wrote.
The store where he bought the dishwasher offered him a 30 percent discount on a new one and the commission sent an investigator to look at the damaged dishwasher, but he doesn't think that's good enough.
