The Buffalo Bills shook up their roster with two separate blockbuster trades Friday, dealing starting receiver Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams and acquiring receiver Jordan Matthews from Philadelphia in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby.
The Bills acquired cornerback E.J. Gaines from the Rams.
The moves were made day after Buffalo opened its preseason with a 17-10 loss to the Vikings. The shakeup continues an offseason overhaul under new coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane.. McDermott acknowledged that his most difficult challenge was not merely breaking the news of Watkins' departure to quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
"I'll take it a step further: How do you sell it to the entire team?" McDermott said, before outlining his message. "You put one step in front of the other and we move on," he said. "I asked them to continue to trust me and our decisions in terms of what we're doing."
Tannehill out for '17
A person familiar with the decision said Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill will have surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the entire season. Tannehill will be placed on injured reserve, the person said.
Jay Cutler, who parted with the Chicago Bears after eight seasons, agreed to delay his fledgling network TV career and signed a $10 million, one-year contract Monday to replace Tannehill.
