Veteran cornerback Vontae Davis quit on the Buffalo Bills at halftime of their home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
"Pulled himself out of the game. He communicated to us that he was done," Bills coach Sean McDermott said after a 31-20 loss. McDermott provided no other details except to bluntly say, "No," when asked if Davis was injured.
Davis, 30, issued a lengthy statement posted on the NFL's Twitter account, announcing he is retiring after 10 seasons.
"This isn't how I pictured retiring from the NFL," he wrote. "But today on the field, reality hit me and hard. I shouldn't be out there anymore."
The 2009 first-round pick, who spent three years with Miami and six with Indianapolis, said he meant no disrespect to teammates and coaches.
"I hold myself to a standard," he wrote. "Mentally, I always expect myself to play at a high level. But physically, I know today that isn't possible and I had an honest moment with myself."
Injury report
Arizona star receiver Larry Fitzgerald was sidelined by a hamstring injury Sunday. The 35-year-old Holy Angels product got hurt in the second half of the Cardinals' 34-0 loss at the Los Angeles Rams, finishing with three receptions for 28 yards.
The Rams had to scramble after kicker Greg Zuerlein was sidelined by a groin injury. They were successful on three two-point conversions, and punter Johnny Hekker made a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter and an extra point in the fourth.
