Briefly: Quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. lifts Army to a 70-point day

Army quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. made his legs a force in the Armed Forces Bowl on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.

Hopkins carried 11 times for 170 yards and five touchdowns, helping the Black Knights overwhelm Houston 70-14 and reach 11 wins for the first time in program history.

The Black Knights (11-2) won their ninth consecutive game.

Wake Forest 37, Memphis 34: Jamie Newman ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left to give the Demon Deacons (7-6) a 37-34 victory over the Tigers (8-6) in the Birmingham (Ala.) Bowl.

Troy 42, Buffalo 32: Sawyer Smith threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, propelling the Trojans (10-3) past the Bulls (10-4) in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Gophers' Estes transferring to Illinois

• Rey Estes, a redshirt freshman defensive back for the Gophers, announced on Instagram that he has transferred to Illinois. Estes, an East St. Louis, Ill., native, played in one game this season after spending the 2017 season as a redshirt. He was recruited as a quarterback but was switched to defensive back last year.

Shiffrin ties record with slalom win

U.S. star Mikaela Shiffrin wrote more World Cup history Saturday, tying the record for women by winning a slalom for the 35th time in her career.

Shiffrin tied Marlies Schild of Austria with 35 slalom wins. Schild won her 35th at age 32. Shiffrin is 23.

Soccer: Crystal Palace sprung the biggest upset of the English Premier League season, beating defending champion Manchester City 3-2 in Manchester, England. Man City fell four points behind leader Liverpool. Palace hadn't won a league game at City since 1990.

Boxing: Josh Warrington retained his IBF featherweight title by beating Carl Frampton by unanimous decision in Manchester, England. … Tony Harrison withstood a late surge by Jermell Charlo to take the WBC super welterweight title in a unanimous decision at Barclays Center in New York.

High school athletics: A referee who told a high school wrestler to cut his dreadlocks or forfeit won't be assigned to matches until after a review, New Jersey's athletic association said. Buena Regional wrestler Andrew Johnson, who is black, had a cover over his hair Wednesday night during a match per national rules, but referee Alan Maloney, who is white, said that wouldn't do. A video showing Johnson getting a hasty haircut was widely viewed.
