Briefly: PGA tournament in Japan will have round with no spectators because of rain

October 26, 2019 at 2:42AM

Organizers of the PGA Tour's first tournament in Japan took the unusual step of closing the course to spectators for the rescheduled second round and also extended the tournament until Monday because of torrential rainfall and flooding around Inzai City.

More than 6 inches of rain was recorded at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. That washed out the second round of the Zozo Championship, which would have begun about 8:30 p.m. Central time Thursday. The rescheduled second round began at 8:30 p.m. Central time Friday on a course with no gallery.

PGA Tour officials announced the event will conclude Monday (beginning late Sunday night Central time) in order to complete 72 holes. The plan was to allow spectators for the final two rounds.

Tiger Woods was tied with Gary Woodland after both players shot 64 in the opening round.

Woods was making his first start in his 23rd season on the PGA Tour, needing one victory to reach 82 wins and tie the career record held by Sam Snead.

Reign's Andonovski to coach U.S. team

U.S. Soccer is expected to name Vlatko Andonovski the new head coach of the women's national team.

Andonovski, the current coach of the Reign FC in the National Women's Soccer League, is expected to sign a contract with U.S. Soccer in the coming days.

U.S. Soccer announced a news conference to name the new coach Monday in New York City.

Andonovski, 43, was considered the front-runner for the job after Utah Royals coach Laura Harvey and North Carolina coach Paul Riley removed their names from consideration.

Andonovski replaces Jill Ellis, who led the U.S. team to back-to-back World Cup titles during her tenure as coach.
