Arizona has chosen former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin to lead its football program.

Sumlin is expected to sign a five-year contract, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents. An introductory news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.

He replaces Rich Rodriguez, who was fired Jan. 2 amid sexual harassment allegations.

Sumlin, a former Gophers assistant coach, was fired after six seasons at Texas A&M in November and had reportedly been in the mix for numerous jobs.

The Aggies went 51-26 and went to a bowl game every season under Sumlin but were 25-23 in SEC play and never matched his first season, when they were 11-2.

Sumlin, 53, also spent four years at Houston, going 35-17. He was Gophers wide receiver coach from 1993 to 1996 and coached quarterbacks in 1997.

Gonzalez, 35, was limited to 71 games last season because of a herniated disk in his back. The Los Angeles Dodgers left him off their postseason roster.

Gonzalez, a five-time All-Star, is owed more than $21 million next season, but the Mets would be responsible for just $545,000.
