Jon Rahm drew some of the attention away from Tiger Woods' 2019 debut, opening with an eagle and shooting a 10-under 62 for a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Rahm played the North course at Torrey Pines, the easier of the two used in the tournament. Justin Rose also played the North and was a stroke behind Rahm.

"You play the South on the first day, you're trying to survive," Rahm said. "On the North, you've got to start under par to keep up. I kept the pedal down."

Woods was on the tougher course, where he won his last major, the 2008 U.S. Open. He made three birdies on the back nine for a 70, which he thought could have been lower but found acceptable given that it was his first competition in nearly two months.

"Shooting a couple under par on the South course is not so bad, but now I'm forced to have to shoot a low one tomorrow just like most of the field did over there today," Wood said.

Charles Howell III and Brandon Nagy had the lowest scores on the South at 66.

"It's a significant decrease ... but we're more interested in why that decrease happened, as opposed to what the number is," said Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president of health and safety.
