Serena Williams exited in tears after playing only 16 minutes Sunday in Toronto, making Bianca Andreescu the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup in 50 years.

Andreescu led 3-1 in the first set when Williams called for a medical timeout. Less than a minute later, the chair umpire announced that Williams was retiring from the match, handing Andreescu her second WTA Premier title of the season.

After the match's end was announced — and after an open microphone picked up Williams saying she was suffering from back spasms — Williams started to cry on her bench. Andreescu went over to comfort her, hugging her and telling Williams how much she admires the 23-time Grand Slam winner.

"I'm not a crier, but thank you," Williams said, still choking back tears, as she accepted the second-place prize. "I'm sorry I couldn't do it today. I tried but I just couldn't do it."

Murray to play singles

• Andy Murray's surgically repaired hip is free of pain, prompting him to return to singles play a few months after he contemplated retirement. Murray will begin play Monday in the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio, after playing only doubles in several tournaments. He'll face Richard Gasquet.

• Rafael Nadal won his fifth Rogers Cup title, beating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-0 in Montreal.

Vela ties scoring record

• Carlos Vela had a goal and two assists to lead Los Angeles FC to a 4-2 victory over the visiting New York Red Bulls. Vela tied Sebastian Giovinco for the most points in an MLS season. Giovinco had 38 goals and assists in 2015. Vela has 10 games left to add to his record.

• Josef Martinez scored twice to extend his MLS-record goals streak to 10 games and lift host Atlanta United over New York City FC 2-1. Martinez has 10 goals in Atlanta's past seven games.

U.S. medalists protest over social issues

Two Americans used their medal-winning moments at the Pan American Games to draw attention to social issues back home.

During their medals ceremonies in Lima, Peru, fencer Race Imboden took a knee and hammer thrower Gwen Berry raised her fist.

"Racism, gun control, mistreatment of immigrants and a president who spreads hate are at the top of a long list" of America's problems, Imboden said in a tweet.

Berry called out injustice in America "and a president who's making it worse."
