Gun Runner will start from one of the outside posts in Saturday's Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park, a less-than-ideal situation even for the top horse in the sport.
At least he'll be out there.
Gun Runner's connections wanted him in the inaugural edition of the Pegasus a year ago, but their entry was denied because Gun Runner had been stabled around horses with a contagious virus.
This time, there was no denying Gun Runner's path to the Pegasus. The only question is whether any of the other 11 horses in the field can deny him the $7 million winner's share of the $16 million purse. Gun Runner, the newly crowned Horse of the Year, will be the heavy favorite to win what will be his final race before retirement.
"I think that we all can feel a little loss over the lack of an opportunity to running in it last year," Gun Runner trainer Steve Asmussen said. "And hopefully this puts us in a position to correct that."
Gun Runner will start from the No. 10 post against a field that includes five of the top six finishers from November's Breeders' Cup Classic: Gun Runner, Collected, West Coast, War Story and Gunnevera.

Brewers finish deal with Cain
Free-agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized an $80 million, five-year contract Friday, one day after Milwaukee acquired center fielder Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins for four prospects.
Cain, 31, spent the past seven seasons in Kansas City and was part of the core group that won the World Series in 2015. He hit .300 with 15 homers, 49 RBI and 26 steals last season.
