Briefly: David Goffin knocks Roger Federer out of ATP Finals

November 19, 2017 at 6:19AM

David Goffin rallied from a set down to beat Roger Federer 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the ATP Finals in London. Goffin had lost to Federer all six times they had played.

"It is the best win of my career, for sure," Goffin said.

Goffin, ranked eighth in the world, became only the sixth man to defeat Rafael Nadal and Federer in the same tournament. Nadal withdrew after the loss during pool play because of an injured knee.

Federer was on course to win the elite season-ending tournament for the seventh time until he wasted two game points and his serve was broken in the second game of the second set.

"Things really turned around for him at that moment," Federer said.

In the final Sunday, Goffin will face Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Jack Sock 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Park falters in LPGA finale

A batch of bogeys canceled Sung Hyun Park's two-day victory lap Saturday at the LPGA Tour's CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Fla.

Park shot a 3-over 75, going from three strokes ahead to one off the lead and from all alone to quite crowded.

Michelle Wie, who lost six weeks playing time this season to an emergency appendectomy, shot a 66 and was in a four-way tie for the lead going into the final round. Kim Kaufman, who is recovering from mononucleosis, shot a 64. Joining them at 10-under 206 were Ariya Jutanugarn (67) and Suzann Pettersen (69). Seven players were tied with Park behind that group, and only four strokes separated the top 31 players.

Park hoped to put her one bad day behind her in her bid to become the first rookie since Nancy Lopez in 1978 to sweep all the major LPGA Tour awards..

"I think that over the course of four days, there is always a day where I'm not quite in tip-top shape," Park said. "I think that day might have been today."

Lexi Thompson, who leads the CME Race to the Globe, suddenly has as good a chance as Park to capture the $1 million bonus. Thompson (69 Saturday) also is poised to win the Vare Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.

Rookie builds on lead

• PGA Tour rookie Austin Cook shot a 4-under 66 to increase his lead to three strokes in the PGA Tour's RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Ga. Cook, a shot ahead after a second-round 62, had five birdies and a bogey — his first of the week — to reach 18-under 194.

• Justin Rose shot 7-under 65 and will take a one-shot lead into the final day of the European Tour's season-ending Tour Championship. It would be his third consecutive European Tour title and a second career Race to Dubai crown.
