Briefly: Czech team takes 2-0 lead on U.S. in Fed Cup final

Barbora Strycova and Katerina Siniakova won their singles matches, giving the Czech Republic a 2-0 lead over the defending champion United States in the Fed Cup final on Saturday in Prague.

Strycova rallied from a set down to defeat Sofia Kenin 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4. Siniakova beat Alison Riske 6-3, 7-6 (2).

The Czechs are one win away from their sixth title in eight years.

To win, the 18-time champion U.S. would have to become the first team to come back from 2-0 down in the final.

Sunday begins with reverse singles. In doubles, the last match of the final, Riske and Danielle Collins will face the No. 1-ranked pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Siniakova.

Golf

Kuchar builds four-stroke lead

Matt Kuchar posted a 6-under 65 to open a four-shot lead in the PGA Tour's Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Kuchar, going after his first PGA Tour title in more than four years, had a total of 20-under 193, four shots ahead of Whee Kim (66).

Lopez ends Mexico drought

• Gaby Lopez won her first LPGA Tour event, shooting a 1-over 73 to finish one shot ahead of Ariya Jutanugarn (73) in the Blue Bay in Hainan Island, China. Lopez is the first winner from Mexico since Lorena Ochoa retired in 2010.

• Scott McCarron moved into position to win the PGA Tour Champions' season points race, shooting a 5-under 66 for a one-stroke lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix.

NFL

Phone celebration costs $30,000

Saints receiver Michael Thomas was fined $30,000 by the NFL for using a phone as a prop for a touchdown celebration in last week's victory over the Rams.

Thomas hid the phone in the bottom of the goalpost and pulled it out after scoring. He was fined for that and for having a mobile device in the bench area.

Among others fined was Carolina defensive tackle Vernon Butler, whose hit on Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick cost him $40,110.

Bills to give Barkley start

• Buffalo will go with newly signed Matt Barkley as starting quarterback Sunday against the New York Jets, rather than provide turnover-prone Nathan Peterman another chance. The Bills ruled out injured rookie Josh Allen on Saturday. Barkley was acquired Oct. 30.

AROUND THE HORN

Auto racing: Christopher Bell won the Xfinity Whelen Trusted to Perform 200 at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Ariz., and secured a spot in the championship race. The victory was the series-high seventh of the season for Bell, last year's Truck Series champion. … Tanner Gray, 19, became the youngest NHRA season champion when he clinched the Pro Stock title by qualifying for the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.

Baseball: Yuki Yanagita homered and drove in four runs, leading Japan to a 12-6 victory over the MLB All-Stars in Tokyo and a 2-0 lead in the six-game exhibition series.

Figure skating: Japanese teen Rika Kihira landed two triple axels and won the women's competition at the NHK Trophy in Hiroshima, Japan, in her Grand Prix debut. Kihira, 16, earn 154.72 points in the free skate for a total of 224.31.

Soccer: Borussia Dortmund beat defending Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich 3-2 in Berlin and opened a seven-point lead in the standings.
