Brewers acquire Christian Yelich from Marlins for handful of prospects

January 26, 2018 at 7:27AM

The Milwaukee Brewers traded a handful of top prospects for Miami outfielder Christian Yelich.

The Brewers gave up minor league outfielder Lewis Brinson, second baseman Isan Diaz, outfielder Monte Harrison and righthanded pitcher Jordan Yamamoto.

Multiple media reports also said that the Brewers agreed with free agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain to a five-year, $80 million deal.

Yelich made it clear he would like to be traded after Miami's new management, led by Derek Jeter, began stripping the payroll by trading outfielders Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna and second baseman Dee Gordon. They would be slashing more money if they dealt Yelich, who has four years remaining on a seven-year, $49.57 million extension that also includes a $15 million team option for 2022. Yelich has a $7 million salary for 2018.

Yelich, 26, batted .282 with 18 homers, 81 RBI, 16 stolen bases and .807 OPS in 156 games for the Marlins. In 643 games with Miami, Yelich has batted .290 with a .369 OBP, 59 homers, 293 RBI and 72 steals.

... Vladimir Guerrero will become the first Hall of Famer to wear an Angels hat on his bronze Hall plaque, a surprise to many because he spent more time with the Montreal Expos.

The Hall gets the final say on how a player is depicted in Cooperstown, N.Y. The decision leaves four current franchises without a cap in the plaque gallery — Colorado, Miami, Tampa Bay and the Washington Nationals.

Guerrero played eight of his 16 seasons with the Expos and six years with the Angels.

The Angels started out as an expansion team in 1961. Reggie Jackson is among those who played for the Angels but has a different cap in the Hall.

Gary Carter, Andre Dawson and Tim Raines have Montreal hats on their Hall plaques.

... The Cubs invited former Twins catcher Chris Gimenez to their major league spring training camp. A nine-year veteran, Gimenez played for Chicago manager Joe Maddon when both were with Tampa Bay in 2012 and 2013 and was later a teammate of free agent pitcher Yu Darvish — a Cubs target — with the Rangers. He hit .218 with seven homers and 16 RBI in 74 games with the Twins last year.

... The Padres say their social media accounts were hacked early Thursday and posts were made that suggested the team had either agreed to terms with free agent Eric Hosmer or that a deal was imminent. "Messages that were inaccurate and unauthorized were posted," the team said.

XFL coming back

The XFL is set for a surprising second life under WWE leader Vince McMahon.

McMahon announced the return of the much-maligned league that spawned He Hate Me and flamed out in 2001 after one wild season.

McMahon said the XFL would return in 2020 but offered few other details about the late winter/early spring football league. The XFL will launch with eight teams, 40-man active rosters and a 10-week regular-season schedule.

The Dave Duerson Act to Prevent CTE is named for the Bears defensive back who was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy after he killed himself at the age of 50. Duerson shot himself in the chest so his brain could be studied for signs of the disease that has been linked to concussions or repeated head trauma.

Auto racing: Wayne Taylor Racing will attempt to defend its Rolex 24 at Daytona title from the pole.
