Brandt Snedeker holds lead in PGA Tour event when rain intervenes

Brandt Snedeker held a three-stroke lead Saturday in the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship when the third round was suspended because of severe weather in Greensboro, N.C.

Snedeker was 16 under for the tournament with 11 holes left in the round at the final event of the PGA Tour's regular season.

Brian Gay was 13 under through 12 holes, and Trey Mullinax, Keith Mitchell, C.T. Pan and D.A. Points were another stroke back.

Thirty players were still on the course when play was halted midafternoon with thunder booming. After a 3-hour, 23-minute delay, organizers chose to resume the round Sunday.

U.S. Amateur final set

• Viktor Hovland of Norway and UCLA sophomore Devon Bling won semifinals and will play for the U.S. Amateur championship Sunday at Pebble Beach in California. Hovland, a junior at Oklahoma State, made six birdies in seven holes on the back nine to knock off Texas teen Cole Hammer 3 and 2. Bling was stretched to the 18th hole for the fourth straight match before beating Stanford senior Isaiah Salinda 1 up.

• Michael Bradley shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA Tour Champions' Dick's Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, N.Y..

• Lizette Salas shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-shot lead over Sung Hyun Park (66) and Amy Yang (65) after the third round of the LPGA Tour's Indy Women in Tech Championship.

Tennis

Djokovic-Federer final

Novak Djokovic closed in on the one title that has eluded him, reaching the final of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Marin Cilic.

Djokovic is trying to become the first to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles since the series started in 1990.

He'll face Roger Federer, who advanced to the final when David Goffin retired because of injury.

Seattle wins again

The host Seattle Sounders rolled past the depleted Los Angeles Galaxy 5-0 for their club-record sixth straight victory.

Seattle (10-9-5) is 7-0-2 in its past nine games. Los Angeles (10-9-7) was without five regulars, including leading scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who told the team he didn't want to play on Seattle's turf and risk a knee injury.

Gymnastics

Mikulak takes fifth title

Sam Mikulak soared to his fifth U.S. gymnastics title, rebounding from a sluggish opening.

The two-time Olympian finished with the top scores on floor exercise, high bar and parallel bars while posting a two-day total of 172.900 to become the sixth man to win five national championships.

Defending national champion Yul Moldauer took second.

Shane Wiskus of Spring Park, who was the Big Ten gymnast of the year last season as a Gophers freshman, finished 19th in the all-around and was seventh on high bar. Two former Gophers also competed. Ellis Mannon finished third on pommel horse, and Jalon Stephens was 26th in the all-around.

Women's tennis: Kiki Bertens advanced to the final of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio, wearing down No. 8 Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. She'll face world No. 1 Simona Halep, who beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4.

Boxing: Tyson Fury beat Italian journeyman Francesco Pianeta on points in Belfast, Northern Ireland, paving the way for a fight with Deontay Wilder, the WBC titleholder. Fury's promoter said a date and site will be revealed soon.

College football: Georgia freshman tailback Zamir White suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a scrimmage. White was one of the biggest names in Georgia's top-ranked 2018 signing class. … LSU junior receiver Drake Davis was suspended indefinitely after his arrest for allegedly hitting and threatening a woman he was dating.
