Gophers senior Hannah Brandt, the two-time reigning WCHA Player of the Year, missed last weekend’s sweep over Ohio State because of an undisclosed injury. Her status for this weekend’s series against Minnesota State Mankato is unknown, but the team said the injury isn’t expected to keep her out much longer.

Coach Brad Frost also announced this week that one of the team’s leading returning scorers, Maryanne Menefee, is no longer on the team. Menefee ranked third on the team with 47 points last season as a junior and was named to the NCAA all-tournament team, after helping lead the Gophers to another national title.

“Maryanne hadn’t played for us in the first half [this season],” Frost said. “And over break we’ve come to a mutual understanding and decision between her and us as a staff that she’d no longer be on team as she focuses on some other things.”

6-5 Iowa State center transfers to U

Bryanna Fernstrom, a 6-5 sophomore center at Iowa State, has transferred to Minnesota and will be eligible for the Gophers after the fall semester of 2016.

Fernstrom, who played for Chisago Lakes in high school, averaged 9.1 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Cyclones in their first 15 games this season and started 12 of them.

Fernstrom also had a team-high 34 blocks, giving her 70 in her career.

“Bryanna has the potential to make an immediate impact on our program,” Gophers coach Marlene Stollings said.
