An enigmatic painting from Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli will go up for auction next year and art watchers will be seeing whether it fetches more than its $80 million estimate, despite the pandemic.
Botticelli's 15th-century portrait of a nobleman in "Young Man Holding a Roundel" is the highlight of Sotheby's Masters Week sale series in New York in January. "Just the sheer beauty of this has been a joy," said Christopher Apostle, who has for more than three decades handled Old Masters and is now head of the division. "I can't think of a Botticelli like this that's been on the open international market."
Opportunities to acquire a Botticelli — the artist behind such masterpieces as "Primavera" and "The Birth of Venus" — are very rare. "The fact that there are 12 known portraits by Botticelli puts it in an elite type of situation," Apostle said. "These are the most personal things he produced, in a way. It's just something he's doing with one individual."
The auction house believes it could get more than $100 million.
Ryan Reynolds eyeing soccer club?
Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could be making an unlikely foray into the soccer business. Wrexham, a Welsh team that plays in the fifth tier of English soccer, revealed that Reynolds and McElhenney are the "two extremely well-known individuals" the club has previously said are interested in investing 2 million pounds ($2.5 million). Reynolds is a Canadian-born actor best known for starring in the "Deadpool" movies. McElhenney, a friend of Reynolds, is an American actor and director who was the creator of TV show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Wrexham has been a fan-owned club since 2011.
It's a girl: Supermodel Gigi Hadid and her musician boyfriend Zayn Malik took to social media to celebrate the arrival of an infant girl, with dad saying he's "grateful" and "thankful." "To try put into words how I am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine," Malik wrote on Twitter. Hadid also shared a similar photo on Instagram, with the caption: "Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend and she's already changing our world. So in love." Neither revealed the baby's name.
Sued: Carole Baskin, who became a pop culture sensation due to Netflix's docuseries "Tiger King," is being sued for defamation. As part of the lawsuit, the daughters of Baskin's former husband are seeking more information about what happened to their father, who disappeared mysteriously more than two decades ago. The amended complaint to an earlier lawsuit was filed by Don Lewis' daughters, Donna Pettis, Lynda Sanchez, and Gale Rathbone, as well as his former assistant, Anne McQueen.
In memory: Juliette Greco, a French singer, actress, cultural icon and muse to existentialist philosophers of the country's post-War period, died at age 93, French media said. With expressive eyes inherited from her Greek ancestors and an impossibly deep, raspy voice, Greco immortalized some of France's most recognizable songs in an enduring seven-decade career, including the classics "Sous le ciel de Paris (Under the Parisian Sky)" and "Je hais les dimanches (I hate Sundays)." Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre famously said she had "millions of poems in her voice."
