THE PROBLEM Newlyweds tackling a complete renovation of their 1926 house ran out of imagination when it came to the boring, blank neutral space for their master bedroom.

THE SOLUTION The bland space got texture and depth with a soft bluish-gray paint wall color, a crisp creamy white for the woodwork and dark hardwood installed on the floors.

HOW IT HAPPENED • The inoperative fireplace was turned from an eyesore into a focal point in the seating area. A deep frame above it was filled it with small pieces of wood cut from split logs, then highlighted with crystal sconces.

• Finishing touches include a headboard in rich charcoal-gray velvet with silver nail trim. The bed is dressed with luxurious fabrics in shades of gray, silver, white and cream.

• An exotic fan draws your eye to the vaulted ceiling while keeping the room cool.

• A chair, table and zebra-print rug tucked into the nook on the far side of the bed finish the room with panache.

BEST TRICK

Custom cabinetry provides storage and display space in the seating area while discreetly concealing the old radiator.

Before Freshly dry-walled, the room was a perfect size for a master suite and already had a spacious walk-in closet, stained-glass windows and an inoperative fireplace.
