Big Ten power rankings

January 18, 2019 at 4:30AM

1. Michigan (17-0, 6-0)

Remember Moe Wagner, who stood nearly 7-0 but could hit three-pointers? He was back this week in the form of Jon Teske, who had 17 first-half points vs. Northwestern. (Previous rank: 1)

2. Michigan St. (16-2, 7-0)

Joshua Langford (foot) and Kyle Ahrens (back) missed their seventh game combined Thursday, but the Spartans still picked up their 19th consecutive Big Ten regular-season win. (2)

3. Maryland (15-3, 6-1)

The Terrapins squandered an 18-point second-half lead vs. Wisconsin but escaped on a big three-pointer from Anthony Cowan. (3)

4. Iowa (15-3, 4-3)

The Hawkeyes are barely recognizable anymore with the way they are playing better defense than any other time in Fran McCaffery's tenure. (9)

5. Nebraska (13-5, 3-4)

Crushing Indiana was the Cornhuskers' best road win in years, but it was hard to keep that momentum going in a home loss to Michigan State. (8)

6. Wisconsin (11-6, 3-3)

The Badgers saw Lakeville North's Nate Reuvers have a career-high 18 points in a loss to Maryland. All of the 6-10 sophomore's points came in the second half. (6)

7. Ohio State (12-4, 2-3)

Who knew that Rutgers loss on the road would turn into a three-game slide, but Friday could be a bounce-back win vs. Maryland at home. (5)

8. Indiana (12-5, 3-3)

The toughest part of the schedule came early for the Hoosiers, who will try to end a three-game losing streak Saturday at Purdue. (4)

9. Purdue (11-6, 4-2)

How entertaining was that scoring duel between Carsen Edwards and Ethan Happ? Edwards has 54 points combined in the past two games. (10)

10. Minnesota (13-4, 3-3)

A bad loss like Wednesday can turn into a downward spiral if Gophers don't get tougher mentally and physically sooner than later. (7)

11. Northwestern (10-7, 1-5)

Chris Collins is looking for something to reward players for their effort, so that could come Friday vs. Rutgers. (11)

12. Illinois (5-12, 1-5)

The Illini might have something to build on now after their first Big Ten victory came in spectacular fashion vs. the Gophers (14)

13. Rutgers (8-8, 1-5)

Steve Pikiell can't figure out the formula that worked vs. Ohio State without leading scorer and rebounder Eugene Omoruyi (knee). (12)

14. Penn State (7-11, 0-7)

The Nittany Lions are still looking for their first Big Ten victory this season; might it come Saturday against a vulnerable Gophers team? (13)

The Gophers played with more urgency, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from another conference sweep, and they lost LJ Mooney to injury in the process.
