Big Ten football power rankings: Hawkeyes, Wolverines tumble after losses

Fourteen conference teams remain undefeated after two weeks.

1. Ohio State (2-0): Julian Sayin completed his first 16 passes and threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns in a 70-0 rout of Grambling.

2. Penn State (2-0): Nittany Lions overcome sluggish start to blank Florida International 34-0. They get FCS Villanova this week and a bye next week before a huge home game against No. 4 Oregon on Sept. 27.

3. Oregon (2-0): Ducks roll over Oklahoma State 69-3, handing Cowboys coach Mike Gundy his worst loss ever. Oregon is averaging 64 points per game.

4. Illinois (2-0): Strong second half sends Fighting Illini to 45-19 win at Duke. They get Western Michigan on Saturday for final tune-up before opening Big Ten play at Indiana.

5. USC (2-0): Trojans amass 755 yards in 59-20 victory over Georgia Southern. They jump into Big Ten play at Purdue this week.

6. Indiana (2-0): Hoosiers roll up 593 yards in 56-9 victory over Kennesaw State. They play host to Indiana State before opening Big Ten play with key game against Illinois.

7. Nebraska (2-0): Cornhuskers overwhelm Akron 68-0 and have another layup against Houston Christian before facing Michigan in Big Ten opener in Lincoln.

8. Gophers (2-0): After beating Buffalo and Northwestern (La.) State by a combined 89-10, Minnesota steps up in class for a trip to California.

9. Michigan State (2-0): QB Aidan Chiles comes up big in 42-40 double-overtime win over Boston College, passing for four TDs, scoring in the second OT and throwing the winning two-point conversion pass.

10. Iowa (1-1): Hawkeyes fall 16-13 at intrastate rival Iowa State. Transfer QB Mark Gronowski went 13-for-24 for 82 yards and has only 127 passing yards through two games.

11. Michigan (1-1): Wolverines true freshman QB Bryce Underwood struggled in 24-13 loss at Oklahoma, going 9-for-24 for 142 yards. Michigan was 3-for-14 on third-down conversions.

12. Washington (2-0): Johan Coleman rushed for five TDs in a 70-10 rout of California-Davis. Huskies are idle until Sept. 20 Apple Cup matchup against Washington State.

13. Wisconsin (2-0): Impressive starting debut for QB Danny O’Neil: 23-for-27, 283 yards, three TDs vs. Middle Tennessee State. He’ll need to be sharp again because Badgers travel to No. 19 Alabama on Saturday.

14. Rutgers (2-0): In a seven-point game with Miami (Ohio) in third quarter, Scarlet Knights pull away for 45-17 win behind four TD passes from Athan Kaliakmanis.

15. Maryland (2-0): Terrapins limit Northern Illinois to 91 passing yards in a 20-9 victory. A visit from Towson this week should make for a 3-0 start entering Big Ten play.

16. Purdue (2-0): The Boilermakers tune up for Big Ten opener against USC by rushing for 214 yards in a 34-17 win over Southern Illinois.

17. Northwestern (1-1): Wildcats toy with Western Illinois 42-7 but now must prepare for a huge jump in quality of opponent. No. 4 Oregon visits on Saturday.

18. UCLA (0-2): Late interception thrown by Nico Iamaleava dooms Bruins’ comeback hopes in 30-23 loss at UNLV. UCLA mustered only 110 yards.
